The Fun of Halloween Decorating

Halloween is the favorite holiday in our house, after Christmas. We look on it as a great occasion for letting our hair down and having real fun as a family. We enjoy every bit of it, from dressing up to visiting neighbors to eating too much candy, but the best part of it, for us, is the Halloween decorating.

Now, normally I wouldn’t want any kind of creepy crawly in my home, but when Halloween approaches, you can find me hanging spiders, cobwebs and bats all around the house, along with the occasional rat. Plus pumpkins, witches, glow-in-the-dark skulls…you get the picture.

There are many ways to go about the business of Halloween decorating. For some, it’s a case of putting an inflatable pumpkin and a few other bits here and there. For others, Halloween decorating is about staging your home and yard for the maximum creepy effect. I’ve seen homes where it seems like you’ve wandered onto the set of a horror movie. No joking, I’ve seen tombstones, hanging skeletons, severed limbs, pools of blood, and I’ve heard all kinds of scary sound effects. And I love it! I often stop the car to take a closer look at the more elaborate displays. I’ve found that these are the best kinds of houses to take my kids when we go trick or treating. That’s because the people who really get into the spirit of Halloween make it more memorable, and they usually have the best treats.

Some people, of course, just do their Halloween decorating indoors, but make it a grand affair. The haunted house theme is popular, with fluttery ghosts, fake body parts, chains and more. Often, these people do it regardless of whether or not they get trick or treaters visiting. It’s simply for their own enjoyment.

Whatever type of Halloween decorating you have in mind, from simple to elaborate, cheap to expensive, you won’t have any trouble finding the items you need. There are so many stores selling Halloween paraphernalia, from retail chains to small specialist shops to online stores, that your imagination will only be limited by your budget. You may come up with new ideas or stick to the classics of Halloween decorating. Whatever you choose this year, I hope you’ll have as much fun decorating your home as I will!
