Homemade Baby Wipes
Baby wipes are an essential part of baby care, but are expensive. If you’re fed up paying over the odds for wipes then it’s time to make your own. Homemade baby wipes are not only cheaper, but better for your baby’s skin. This article explains how to make them.
An easy way to save money while at the same time keeping your baby's skin healthy is to stop buying expensive commercial baby wipes and make your own instead. Homemade baby wipes are cheap, convenient and easy to make. So what do you need to make them?
You need a roll of good quality kitchen paper towels such as Bounty or Viva. Next, some liquid baby bath soap, a lidded container and water. And that’s all! I bet you can already see, with many baby wipes costing well over $3 per tub, the potential savings. A roll of Bounty or Viva paper towels cost around $1, and each roll is halved to make two refills of baby wipes. Baby bath liquid is inexpensive, and each container of homemade baby wipes uses only 2 tablespoons per container.
The best thing about making homemade baby wipes, apart from the cost savings, is that you can choose the liquid that goes into them. Commercial baby wipes often contain undesirable ingredients such as alcohol, fragrance and chemicals which can dry out your baby’s skin. Baby bath liquid is kinder. If, like me, you prefer to use natural or organic products for your family, then this is an ideal way to use them to benefit your baby.
Here's the method for creating homemade baby wipes. First, choose a lidded container a little larger than a quart container. It needs to be a little larger than a roll of toilet paper; this will ensure it can hold a roll of paper towels cut in half the short way. Then, with a sharp knife, cut two slits in the lid in the shape of an X.
Take the roll of paper towels, and holding it firmly, cut it in half so that it resembles two rolls of toilet paper. Place one of the halves into the container with the cardboard tube facing upwards.
In another container, mix together two cups of water and two tablespoons baby bath liquid. Pour the mixture on top of the paper towels and wait about five minutes for it to soak in properly. Then, carefully pull the cardboard core out of the middle; the innermost piece of paper should come with it. Discard the cardboard tube and pull the inner piece of paper through the slit you have made in the lid. Close the container and you have your homemade baby wipes, ready for use.
Now that you’ve seen how easy it is to make homemade baby wipes, and how much better they are for your baby and your wallet, you’ll be converted!
