Everyday Healthy Food
Good health is big business these days. No matter where you turn, you can find information about being healthier. It can be confusing, with conflicting ideas on what constitutes being healthy. Many people think that being healthy requires a radical change in lifestyle, but that isn’t the case. One of the easiest and best ways to improve your health is to eat healthy food. That doesn’t mean you have to eat things that are boring or tasteless or faddy like the various incarnations of Atkins diets; everyday food is healthy if you prepare and cook it the right way.
As a rule of thumb with healthy food, the less you do to it the better it is for you. A good way to
change your eating habits for the better is to cut down on ready-prepared food and make your own instead. Prepackaged food is laden with salt and artificial ingredients. Of course, it’s quick and convenient, but if you have the fresh ingredients you can produce a healthy, flavorsome meal just as quickly.
A good example of an everyday, inexpensive meal involving healthy food would be hamburgers. Buy or make hamburgers with lean meat, and instead of frying, grill them so that any fat runs away. Put the patties in a wholegrain bun instead of white and serve with a tossed salad or steamed vegetables. Don’t add salt. For dessert have some fresh, in season fruit. This tasty meal of healthy food can be on your table in less than half an hour. Grilling or baking lean meats, fish or chicken a fast and easy way to cook. Toss a salad of fresh greens, tomatoes and bell peppers while the meat is cooking. Round out your meal with vegetables. Frozen ones are fine; in fact they’re often fresher because they are frozen right after picking. Be adventurous; if there are some foods you haven’t tasted then give them a try. If you have a good local grocery store you will be able to get healthy food options like wholegrain breads, lean cuts of meat, olive oil, herbs or exotic fruit and vegetables. If you’re not sure how to prepare these foods, look for hints and tips in-store.
You can use healthy food every day to prepare nutritious meals, but if you want speed and convenience without all the additives, then set aside a few hours every so often to cook larger quantities of healthy food for the freezer. Freeze in individual portions so that if any member of the family needs to eat at a different time, or if you can’t face cooking after a long day at work, you just need to pop your healthy food into the microwave for a meal in moments.
Eating healthy food doesn’t have to cost you time, money or energy. All it takes is a few small steps and you and your family will be living a healthier lifestyle.
