Many of us naively assume that, because we are going to be the best, most patient, most involved parents our children will respond accordingly and be rational, well-behaved and a constant delight. You may remember this as your toddler screams on the floor of your local grocery store or hits the child from next door over the head with a toy.
If the parent of an older child informs you that it gets worse, not better as they grow, believe them. It does. Children have the ability to make us laugh, cry, be angry, be proud or just plain stressed out. Despite this, or perhaps because of it, we need to persevere with the job of raising them properly. If we take the time to try and understand our children then we have the chance of helping them become well-adjusted adults. That’s our job and also our reward as parents.
